Breaking Waves in Population Flows

چکیده
We test the controversial ideas about the role of corridors in fragmented animal habitats. Using simulation studies we analyze how fragmentation affects a simple prey-predator system and how the introduction of openings that connect the habitats changes the situation. Our individual based model consists of 3 levels: renewable prey food, as well as prey and predators that both have a simple economy. We find, in line with intuition, that the fragmentation of a habitat has a strong negative effect especially on the predator population. Connecting the fragmented habitats facilitates predator (and hence prey) survival, but also leads to an important counterintuitive effect: in the presence of a high quality predator, connected fragmented systems fare better in terms of coexistence than do unfragmented systems. Using a frequency domain analysis we explain how corridors between sub-habitats serve as “wave breakers” in the population flow, thus preventing deadly density waves to

Steep. Short-Crested Waves and Related Phenomena
Steep, short-crested waves, as well as a large variety of three-dimensional propagating wave patterns have been created in laboratory, utilizing a plunging half-cone. Monochromatic waves, over a range of frequencies and amplitudes through breaking and including soliton wave groups near resonance, have been observed and studied in a small wave flume. This monochromatic wavemaker creates complex ...
متن کاملTwo-Phase CFD and PIV EFD for Plunging Breaking Waves, Including Alternative CFD Approaches and Extensions for Air/Water Ship Flow
This paper represents a first step towards the development of two-phase CFD methods for small and large scale ship hydrodynamic applications. Two-phase level set approaches are being implemented in CFDShip-Iowa to extend the modeling capabilities of the current version 4 along with complementary experiments for validation. The experiments are conducted in an open channel flume using bottom moun...
متن کاملAnalysis of Migration Flows to 22 Areas of Tehran
The political situation in Tehran has caused the city to become a commercial, industrial, administrative, educational and military center of Iran for decades. Such a situation has created waves of immigration and displacement of population from all over the country to the city. In order to understand the situation of the immigrant population of Tehran, this paper uses census data from 2006 and ...
متن کاملNonlinear Stability of Two – Layer Flows ∗
We study the dynamics of two–layer, stratified shallow water flows. This is a model in which two scenarios for eventual mixing of stratified flows (shear-instability and internal breaking waves) are, in principle, possible. We find that unforced flows cannot reach the threshold of shearinstability, at least without breaking first. This is a fully nonlinear stability result for a model of strati...
متن کاملStudy of Parameters Affecting Separation Bubble Size in High Speed Flows using k-ω Turbulence Model
Shock waves generated at different parts of vehicle interact with the boundary layer over the surface at high Mach flows. The adverse pressure gradient across strong shock wave causes the flow to separate and peak loads are generated at separation and reattachment points. The size of separation bubble in the shock boundary layer interaction flows depends on various parameters. Reynolds-averaged...
متن کاملTraveling Waves of Some Symmetric Planar Flows of Non-Newtonian Fluids
We present some variants of Burgers-type equations for incompressible and isothermal planar flow of viscous non-Newtonian fluids based on the Cross, the Carreau and the power-law rheology models, and on a symmetry assumption on the flow. We numerically solve the associated traveling wave equations by using industrial data and in order to validate the models we prove existence and uniqueness of ...
